Basic Facts on Resolution & Memory

Resolution determines image quality and maximum print size. It is a major factor in the cost of a digital camera. For example, a 1MP digital camera will cost less than a 5MP model. The way that a digital image will be used (computer viewing vs. enlarged prints) will determine the resolution required for good results. The following chart provides some guidance.

The number of images that can be saved on a memory card is determined by the digital camera's resolution (image quality) setting. The camera settings can be changed at any time to conserve space (MB) on the memory card. Lower resolution settings do not have large file sizes, so more images can be saved. Below is a chart that will show you the number of images that you can store on a memory card based on the resolution of your camera. This table is based on averages, storage capacities will vary based on image content and camera model.
